Why this video clip? – you’ll know the reason in a minute.
“Nature has placed mankind under the government of two sovereign masters, Pain and Pleasure… They govern us in all we do, in all we say, in all we think: every effort we can make to throw off our subjection, will serve but to demonstrate and confirm it”.
In his book “Awaken the Giant Within”, Anthony Robbins stresses that there are two “forces” that prevents or motivates us to take decisions. These are Pain and Pleasure.
We may not be aware of it, but, whenever we try to start or stop doing something, we first balance the Pains associated with leaving such a habit and the Pleasure associated to the new behavior. For example, someone who wants to “Quit Smoking” will invariably start assessing the Pains:
- Stop enjoying that cigarette after mealtime and/or bedtime;
- Stop enjoying the feeling of holding a cigarette between his fingers;
- Being rejected by his most close friends;
- And so on…
Then he’ll be assessing the pleasure of a “life without tobacco”:
- Improved health
- Being in control of his own life / new level of self-confidence
- Being accepted by other people
- And so on…
In the above example, and it will always be the same with respect to whatever “decision” we take, the “smoker” will soon realize that fighting Pain is an immediate challenge, while Pleasure is a long term reward.
From Tony Robbins’s book, I particularly appreciate the following sentence:
…The truth is that we can learn to condition our minds, bodies and emotions to link Pain or Pleasure to whatever we choose. By changing what we link Pain and Pleasure to, we will instantly change our behaviors.
Advertisers know something called Neuro-Association. Thus they use Pain and Pleasure “to play” and stimulate our emotions up to their peaks, to finally associate such state of spirit to specific products. Historical Ads, like “Michael Jackson and Pepsi”, are great examples.
Tony Robbins claims that you must use Pain and Pleasure to shape every aspects of your life… If you don’t have a plan for your life, someone else does. He advises that in order to keep your children away from drugs you must teach them to associate Pains to the addiction, before someone else attempt to show them the illusory pleasures. That’s exactly the message that “Toy Djack” is trying to share with the above Video Clip, (Life without Drug).
I would prefer to show the pleasure of spending our life without drugs instead of exposing children to so shocking images, (You’ll understand my point of view by reading my article “The Golden Key to Success”) . However researches show and Tony Robbins stresses that “People do more to avoid Pain than to gain Pleasure”.
Please take a moment to watch the video and share it with your children. The lyrics and the pictures speak for themselves.
